Cillin van Unrooy forced to end cyclocross season early with broken ribs

Shirin van Anrooij suffered a broken rib in a training crash and was forced to end his cyclocross season early.

In a medical update on Instagram, Baloise Trek Lions confirmed that van Anrooij was injured in a training crash before the Christmas block of cyclocross races in December.

"Unfortunately, Shirin van Anuloy will not be competing in any CX races this season, a severe crash during CX training left her with a lot of pain in her ribs and she tried to fight it as best she could," Barrow's Trek Lions confirmed on Instagram's medical update confirmed.

"However, with one bruised rib and one fracture, the risk of competing in the race is too great. At this point, her recovery is our top priority."

"We are working with the team to get her back on her feet.

Despite injuring her ribs during the second to last week of December, van Unrooy continued to race, finishing second in the Exacto Cross Mor Gilbermere and sixth in the UCI Cyclocross World Cup in Antwerp.

He started the World Cup in Gavelle, but was unable to finish due to the pain of his injury.

"My heart said yes, but my body screamed no. I was really looking forward to Christmas and especially to show good form in my favorite race. But during cross-training I hit my ribs really hard and fell over, which made that impossible."

"In the crosses in Mol and Antwerp I was able to ride good crosses while still fighting the pain.

Van Unrooy had a strong season, winning the Trek Cup, two podium finishes at the Exacto Cross Series in Bellingen and Mol, and a top 10 finish in the World Cup series.

She will not be able to compete in the UCI World Championships in Tabor in February. The top priority at this point is her recovery," said Baloise Trek Lions.
