On stage 16 of the Vuelta a España, 34-year-old Danish rider Jakob Fuglsang had a long wait for a Grand Tour victory.

The Astana rider finished 22 seconds ahead of Tao Geoghegan Hart (Team Ineos) and 40 seconds ahead of teammate Luis Leon Sanchez.

Six minutes later, young Slovenian Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) led race leader and fellow Slovenian Primoz Roglic (Jumbo Visma), 23 seconds ahead of Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) in second overall. Pogacar is now 6 seconds behind Valverde, and the battle for the podium is heating up.
