Dombrowski signs with UAE team Emirates

Joe Dombrowski is leaving EF Education First to join UAE Team Emirates in 2020, the American climber's new team announced today.

Dombrowski, 28, spent the past five seasons with EF Education First in various forms, joining the team in 2015 as Cannondale Garmin from Team Sky, where Dombrowski spent two seasons.

The move comes on the heels of his most successful season in years: this year, Dombrowski scored his third career win with a stage victory at the Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah in Park City, his first year with the team under Jonathan Vaughters' direction! He added a stage win and overall victory in the same race in 2015. He also finished 12th overall in this year's Giro d'Italia, his best Grand Tour finish.

"I had heard good things about UAE Team Emirates from many people I trusted," Dombrowski said on the team's website after signing a two-year contract.

"The team made some good and interesting signings in the transfer market. I am excited to be part of where the team is going," said Davide Formolo, a fellow climber who joined from Bora-Hansgrohe, Max Richese, who joined from Detunink-Quickstep to lead out sprinter Fernando Gaviria, Larry mentioned young American talent Brandon McNulty, who moved from UHC, and others.

"I have made good progress this season and I hope to continue that in the next two years with UAE Team Emirates," Dombrowski said.

UAE Team Manager Joxen Matshin added, "Dombrowski is a pure climber and a very interesting rider. He is a rider who showed great potential early in his career and has a wealth of experience competing at the highest level. As we saw at this year's Giro d'Italia, he can ride with the best riders in the climbs.

"I believe Joe can be an important rider for the team. He has the necessary qualities and the right mindset to help us in the last few kilometers of the hardest races. Joe will be a valuable member of the team and his signing is part of the broader development and growth of the team."

The team also announced one-year contract renewals for Marco Marcato and Alexandr Liabushenko.
